Butterflies of Periyar Tiger Reserve

Butterflies are beautiful, mainly day-flying insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera, which also includes moths. Like all holometabolous insects, butterflies go through a complete metamorphosis with four distinct stages in their life cycle: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult.

Butterflies are known for their vividly colored wings and graceful, fluttering flight. They play a vital role in the ecosystem as pollinators and indicators of a healthy environment.

Scientifically, butterflies are classified into:

  • True Butterflies (Superfamily Papilionoidea)

  • Skippers (Superfamily Hesperioidea)

  • Moth-Butterflies (Superfamily Hedyloidea)

The remaining Lepidoptera families are typically referred to as moths.

🌸 Fascinating Features of Butterflies

  • Polymorphism – Different forms within a species.

  • Mimicry – Some butterflies imitate the appearance of other species to deter predators.

  • Aposematism – Bright colors warn predators of their toxicity or unpleasant taste.

Beyond their ecological importance, butterflies have long held symbolic value in visual arts, folklore, and literature, often representing transformation, hope, and the beauty of nature.
