Mammals of Periyar Tiger Reserve

Mammals (Class Mammalia) are a group of air-breathing vertebrate animals uniquely characterized by:

  • Endothermy (warm-bloodedness)

  • Hair or fur

  • Three middle ear bones

  • Mammary glands in females that produce milk to nourish their young

Most mammals also have sweat glands, specialized teeth, and—in the case of placental mammals—a placenta that supports the developing fetus during gestation. The name “mammal” is derived from the Latin word mamma, meaning “breast.”
